Lettuce Link Needs Volunteers

It's time to dig in and get your hands dirty for your community.

Lettuce Link, which supplies low-income families in Seattle with fresh organic produce, needs your help.

"Volunteers are wonderful, cash donations are great, equipment is good," says Michelle Bates-Benetua, the Lettuce Link program manager at Solid Ground.

"It takes a lot to run a farm."

The farm being the 4-acre Marra Farm in South Park which produces 13-thousand pounds of organic produce each year. Volunteers help harvest the produce and distribute it to the nearby Providence Regina House.

Lettuce Link has been connecting communities with fresh organic produce for the past 20 years.

"Twenty-years ago, it was really a radical idea to think that people, no matter what their income level, deserve the best, healthiest food around," says Michelle.

As we head inot the bulk of the harvest season, she says not only do they need a lot of help on their farm, they need volunteers to help harvest fruit in their own communities.

"I've heard from people at the food banks that they really appreciate the fact that there are people in the community who are willing to grow produce and bring it and share it with them at the food banks."

If you'd like to volunteer with Lettuce Link, you can contact them at: (206) 694-6777 or lettucelink@solid_ground.org.
